PS 503 Shows What They've Learned at Field Day

In partnership with NIA, P.S. 503, led by its principal Bernadette Fitzgerald, held a field day on June 3, 2011 at Red Hook Park. Cheerleaders greeted their fellow students as they arrived at the park, beginning a fun-filled day of physical activity and nutrition education.

With the help of NIA Recreation Coordinator Angelo Smeragliuolo, over 450 children enjoyed activities including potato sack races, obstacle courses, and agility races. NIA provided printed materials to parents about healthy eating and fitness concepts.

In partnership with Coca-Cola and NIA, nutritionist Christina Rivera presented info about portion sizes and the USDA's new Food Plate, using visuals to punctuate her message. She reminded the youngsters about the importance of eating breakfast and making sure that fresh fruits and vegetables are a big part of every meal. Christina also presented an interactive, bilingual workshop to parents about the food plate, healthy eating, whole grains, carbohydrates, and fats.

NIA - PS 503 take to the field as part of HELP program.
