One of the original reasons for the formation of the NIA was to revitalize the commercial areas in the neighborhoods the organization serves. To that end, the NIA spear-headed its first project, “Operation Clean Sweep”, as a collaborative effort with Catholic Charities, merchants, residents, church and community leaders, youth, seniors, the NYC Department of Sanitation, the 66th Police Precinct, and Community Boards 10 and 11. The venture turned out to be so successful it spurred future actions, such as graffiti removal, neighborhood clean-ups, and special environmental events sponsored by the NIA.
