4 Ways for Parents to Support LGBTQIA+ Youth

Pride Month may be ending, but LGBTQIA+ youth deserve our love and support all year long. Whether you are a parent, a teacher, or a friend, there are things we can all do to make our homes, our classrooms, and our communities a more welcoming place for all of us.

1. LET THEM KNOW YOU LOVE THEM

Providing unconditional love and support may sound basic, but for many young people, telling their parents is still the scariest part of coming out. As much as teens might act like they don’t need your approval, parental support is key in youth well-being. Show your child how much they mean to you by your words and through your actions.

2. EDUCATE YOURSELF

Take some time to learn about the history of the fight for LGBTQIA+ rights as well as issues that are important in the LGBTQIA+ community today. Value and use correct and inclusive language. Not sure where to begin? If you aren’t already familiar with the difference between gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation/attraction, check out this guide to gain a better understanding. Want to connect with other families and allies? Look up your local PFLAG chapter.

3. BECOME AN ALLY FOR YOUR CHILD AND LGBTQIA+ RIGHTS

So what is an ally anyway? An ally is straight and/or cisgender person who supports the LGBTQIA+ community and advocates for equal rights. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community still face many legal obstacles that straight and cisgender people never have to worry about. Want to learn more? To see state-by-state information view the HRC State Equality Index 2020 - HRC, or the bipartisan Freedom for All Americans campaign’s info for each state.  Ready to start speaking up for LGBTQIA+ rights? PFLAG has some resources to get you started.

4. MAKE TIME TO LISTEN

Staying connected to your child’s life makes it easier for them to approach you with bigger, more complex issues. The more you communicate with your child, the more comfortable they will feel. If you ever think your child needs more support than you are able to offer, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone.
